Emission Factors in GHG123

GHG123 comes with standard factors that will meet the needs of most organizations.

We update these annually. In addition, we can provide specific factors where there is a need.

New factors are usually released during the summer; it may therefore be relevant to recalculate data that was entered before the new factors became available, once they have been updated. Recalculation is easily done by either 1) saving the transaction again or 2) using batch functionality if you have many transactions that need to be recalculated. See an example of how to use the batch functionality under the page Deletion of data.

DEFRA

For most elements in the solution, we use the factor set from DEFRA (UK Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs). This is an open and well-established factor set that is widely used. It is verifiable and therefore a transparent factor set. The set includes, for example, factors for fuels, transport, materials, and waste.

NVE

For Norwegian electricity, we use factors from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE). This provides both location-based and market-based factors for electricity consumption.

IEA

For customers with parts of their organization outside Norway, we use IEA for foreign electricity factors. This is a well-established factor set from the International Energy Agency.

These factors require a separate agreement and cost to use; please contact support@emisoft.com if you would like to know more.

EcoInvent

This dataset contains detailed factors for various types of materials, such as dairy products, aluminum, etc. For customers where a large share of the climate impact comes from specific materials, it may be relevant to use these factors. They require a separate agreement for use; please contact support@emisoft.com if you would like to know more.

In GHG123, under “Understand”, you will find a dedicated report for factors used in your climate inventory called “Factor used”.
